  • 2021 data from the Pennsylvania Youth Survey highlights that Cumberland County’s youth need opportunities to get involved in the community and avoid engaging in negative behaviors. Only 18.4% of 6th to 12th grade students polled reported participating in organized community activities, while 34.4% believe it would be easy for them to obtain alcohol. These findings show that local youths need opportunities to get involved in their community so that they avoid using drugs or alcohol, especially during the summer months.

According to scholarly research collected by learner.com, youths can regress up to 2 months in their reading abilities over the summer, which can create a reading gap by 9th grade and limit their success in school. When combined with the learning loss brought on by the global pandemic and research that shows these outcomes are often brought about by a lack of access to summer learning, this trend makes it extremely important for families to keep their children involved in educational activities over the summer months.

The Hope Station Summer Scholarship Program awards 25 families in the Carlisle area funding so that they can enroll their children in summer camps or programming.
